Position Overview
GER is seeking a Smoke Remediation & Repairs Project Manager to startup, oversee, and manage smoke remediation and repair operations in response to the Eaton wildfires in Altadena. This role is responsible for managing project timelines and budgets, coordinating cleaning efforts, managing repair and restoration works to restore affected properties, and working with the community and other nonprofits to be the gold standard in remediation and restoration efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental remediation or construction site management, with strong leadership, organizational, and operational skills.
This role requires flexibility and adaptability. The Smoke Remediation & Repairs Project Manager must be prepared to pivot strategies, wear different hats, adjust remediation approaches, and support new initiatives as needed to maximize the overall impact of GER’s wildfire recovery efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Timeline Execution
Own, establish and kickstart foundational systems and programming for all smoke remediation and home repair activities, including pre- and post-environmental testing, a decision matrix for different tiers of severity, restoration, repairs, trash removal, and appliance and furniture replacement.
Develop, manage, and execute on a detailed project plan, timeline and work schedules, ensuring remediation and restoration activities remain on track, and all requirements for the work are being met.
Create, maintain, and update timelines, projected costs, and budgets for the entirety of the project, for all components.
Coordinate logistics for contractors and homeowners in an organized and empathetic manner, serving as the main point of contact for all parties.
Lead and manage efforts to add additional beneficiaries to the program, monitoring and ensuring homeowners are moved through the intake process and pipeline with proper communication and efficiency.
Lead and own contractor management, including establishing contracts, writing Scopes of Work, setting start dates and finish dates, seeking bids as needed, following GER’s procurement policy, communicating daily with contractors for logistics, performing Scope of Work quality checks on homes in progress, and generally ensuring success and efficiency of the program in terms of contractor management.
Team Leadership & Supervision
Directly manage and support team members assigned to smoke remediation and home repair activities, providing clear expectations, regular check-ins, and constructive feedback.
Assign tasks, monitor workloads, and ensure team members have the resources, training, and guidance necessary to meet performance goals.
Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented environment that encourages initiative, accountability, and adherence to GER values and safety standards.
Financial & Resource Management
Track expenses and ensure remediation activities remain within budget constraints.
Project out costs per project component, including rate of spend on a weekly level, and ensure proper execution.
Provide financial reports on resource usage and operational costs.
Create, maintain, and manage a timeline Gantt chart, sharing out home statuses weekly, alongside projections of future home timelines, to the end of the project.
Stakeholder Coordination & Reporting
Liaise with local officials, community members, property owners, and GERleadership to ensure alignment on remediation and restoration efforts.
Maintain clear communication with partners and program staff regarding project progress.
Be point of contact with program partner, the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, and ensure alignment on all remediation and restoration activities.
As needed, participate in the Smoke Remediation and Health & Safety Cluster/ Long-Term Working Group within the Eaton Fire Collaborative.
Develop standard operating procedures and FAQs for pre- and post-environmental testing, smoke remediation, home repairs, and trash removal, for program and community use.
Prepare and submit regular reports on remediation activities, team performance, and impact.
Additional Programmatic Support
Lead on debris management activities, as applicable, including developing standard operating practices, understanding the relevant requirements and regulations, managing the budget and procurement process, and contractor management, among others.
Provide programmatic support to home hardening and fire-resistant landscaping, as possible and as needed.
Program Flexibility & Adaptability
Adapt to new initiatives, evolving program priorities, and operational changes to enhance program impact.
Collaborate with GER3 leadership to optimize remediation strategies and pivot approaches as needed to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Take initiative in identifying opportunities for innovation, process improvements, and expanded program support.
Qualifications & Requirements
5+ years of experience in smoke remediation, environmental remediation, construction, construction management, or a related field.
Proven ability to take initiative, cut through complexity, and independently drive projects forward, delivering tangible results quickly even in disorganized or evolving conditions.
Requires a self-motivated executor who actively owns outcomes, identifies gaps, and solves problems proactively.
Proven leadership experience managing teams in field operations.
Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Financial literacy and experience managing budgets or project expenses.
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving program needs, operational adjustments, and new initiatives.
