Description

The GIS Assistant has the responsibility to adhere to the PSEAH Policy (Protection against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment). GIS Assistant has the obligation to complete all mandatory trainings related to the Code of Conduct and the PSEA policy and report any safeguarding concern such as breaches of organisational policies or codes of conduct according to Acted’s procedures. GIS Assistant carries out work duties in a way that does not harm children, vulnerable adults or other staff or volunteers.

Location: Syria
The GIS Assistant will be based in Damascus.

JOB PURPOSE

The GIS Assistant supports the GIS unit by assisting in the preparation of maps, spatial datasets, and basic geospatial analyses for REACH assessments and operational needs. The role focuses on data preparation, map production, and routine GIS tasks under the supervision of the Officer.

OBJECTIVES

Under the supervision of the Officer, the GIS Assistant will:

Support the production of GIS maps and spatial datasets for assessments and operational activities.
Assist in data cleaning, validation, and organization of spatial and assessment-related datasets.
Contribute to basic spatial analyses following established methodologies.
Support information management systems and ensure proper data handling.
Coordinate with research and field teams to support mapping needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
The GIS Assistant responsibilities include the following:

1.Data management, cleaning and analysis

Manage GIS projects using templates and documentation.
Assist in cleaning, organizing, and maintaining GIS and assessment datasets.
Support data validation processes prior to map production.
Ensure data confidentiality and compliance with Acted/REACH data protection SOPs.
Update and maintain country-level spatial databases under supervision.
Responsibility for final validation with HQ.
2. GIS and mapping responsibilities

Prepare static maps and basic web maps using provided templates.
Support spatial analysis tasks following predefined methodologies.
Update maps based on feedback from the line supervisor and research teams.
Ensure GIS products follow corporate cartographic standards.
Assist in linking spatial data with assessment datasets.
Report progress and challenges to the line supervisor and relevant research team members
3.Research planning

Support the preparation of maps and spatial inputs for assessment planning.
Assist in producing operational maps for field movement planning.
4.Data confidentiality and protection

The GIS Assistant will maintain the strictest confidentiality on all data collected and related processes, ensuring full compliance with IMPACT’s data protection policy and SOPs. The GIS Assistant will actively take measures to prevent the unauthorized sharing of any information and data belonging to IMPACT and its partners or collected during his/her assignment with Acted/REACH.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) :
Key Performance Indicators are measurable values used to assess how effectively the role contributes to achieving mission and organizational objectives. For this position, KPIs will focus on both the quality and innovation of GIS deliverables. Examples include:

% of assigned GIS products delivered on time and in line with agreed technical specifications.
% of GIS outputs approved by the line supervisor with minor revisions.
Consistency and accuracy in maintaining and updating GIS datasets in accordance with IMAPCT/REACH data management standards.
Effectiveness in responding to GIS support requests from research and field teams within agreed timelines.
Demonstrated improvement in GIS technical skills and adherence to cartographic and data quality standards over time.
In addition to KPIs, staff performance is also guided by competencies, the knowledge, skills, and behaviours that lead to successful performance.

Language skills: Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Professional Experience: At least 1 year of relevant work experience, preferably in the humanitarian field.
Research and Analysis Skills: Proven expertise in geospatial information management and analysis, with strong spatial analysis capabilities.
Technical Proficiency:
Advanced knowledge of the ESRI software suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online) and other mapping platforms such as QGIS.
Strong skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Basic familiarity with Google Earth Engine or cloud-based geospatial platforms is considered an asset.
Familiarity with R, STATA, Python, or other statistical software is an advantage.
Knowledge of Adobe Suite (especially InDesign and Illustrator) is an asset.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, with proven ability to draft clear and effective reports.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, or related field, or a closely related field, with advanced knowledge in GIS.
