Job Type Full Time

Description

The MENTOR Initiative (‘MENTOR’) is a humanitarian organisation specialising in disease control and improving access to healthcare in emergency settings currently across countries in Africa, the Middle East and South America. MENTOR is the leading organisation dedicated to the control of malaria and other vector-borne diseases in complex, vulnerable settings.

MENTOR delivers large scale disease control interventions working with remote and underserved communities affected by emergencies such as conflict and natural disasters. We also help build the technical and operational capacity of local and international partners to incorporate medium- and long-term disease control systems into their operations and country strategy.

Overall job purpose

The Prevention Assistant will supervise and guide the team of Environmental Prevention Agents (APAs - Agentes de Prevención Ambiental) responsible for the direct implementation of community-based prevention activities in La Guaira, under the coordination of the Prevention Coordinator. The role will contribute to a programme addressing vector-borne disease (VBD) and WASH in the aftermath of the earthquake of June 2026.

Task and responsibilities

1. Supervision and Guidance of APAs
Organise, guide and supervise the daily field work of the APAs, ensuring activities (vector control, IEC/BCC messaging, WASH item distribution) are carried out according to the work plan and technical guidelines.
Provide on-the-job orientation and refresher training to APAs on vector control techniques, IEC/BCC messaging and WASH distribution.
Conduct regular field visits to monitor and ensure the quality of the APAs' work and provide corrective feedback where needed.
Plan and coordinate the daily/weekly work schedules, routes and target areas of the APA teams.
Identify operational challenges or needs raised by APAs and escalate them to the Prevention Coordinator.
2. Data and Reporting
Consolidate and review the data collected by APAs (households visited, activities conducted, items distributed) before submission.
Identify and flag missing or inconsistent data collected by APAs and follow up for correction.
Support the Prevention Coordinator in compiling activity reports.
3. Operational Support
Ensure proper distribution, use, handling and return of prevention materials and equipment among APA teams.
Support the correct use of transport for the deployment of APA teams to field locations.
Ensure APAs under supervision follow security procedures, safe working practices and the MENTOR code of conduct.
4. Communication and Team Management
Organise regular briefings and meetings with the APA teams.
Report daily/weekly to the Prevention Coordinator on progress, challenges and APA performance.
Relay any community feedback, complaints or concerns raised through APAs to the Prevention Coordinator in a timely manner.
5. Other
Any other duties as may be assigned by the Prevention Coordinator.
As the MENTOR Initiative is working in a constantly changing humanitarian aid environment, reasonable specific work duties may be requested that may not fit into the above job description, but which will help promote overall programme goals and aims.
