JOB SUMMARY

To guide patients through their pregnancies and deliver their babies. The midwife's responsibilities include identifying high-risk pregnancies, referring patients to obstetricians as needed and also be able to provide follow-up care to patients after labor.

Midwife will be based in the health centres & will provide holistic, reproductive health services to mothers.

Midwife is expected to provide advice, care and support for women and their partners and families before, during and after childbirth & is to help women make their own decisions about the care and services they access.
Midwife should care for newborn children, providing health education and parenting support. Midwife is personally responsible for the health of both mother and child and only refer to obstetricians if there are medical complications.
Receive the pregnant mother in the appropriate place and assess her health conditions.
Ensure that mothers are handled properly and cared for in case of emergency and assisted them in labour.
Offering concrete advice to parents in the daily care of their newborn babies
Collaborate with doctors and ensure that they develop a plan for proper patient care.
Guide and provide information about pain relief, birth positions, and delivery options.
Identify the signs and symptoms of high-risk pregnancies and complicated labor and contact the doctors for further assistance.
Ensure the safety of both mother and newborn during and after childbirth.
Ensure that accurate clinical procedures are followed during labour and delivery.
Offer advice and help parents to cope with miscarriage, termination of pregnancy, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
Provide psycho-social support and reassurance to the coupled and their relatives.
Ensure that all patient diagnostic testing is done within the required time and that patients are monitored well.
Ensure that pregnant women are assessed, samples taken, pulses, body temperatures, blood pressure, and screening tests are done within the required time frame.
Ensure that the patient’s medications are given at the right time without any delay. (Tablets, injections, and infusions)
Teach new and expectant mothers how to feed, care for and bathe for their babies.
Any other tasks assigned by the line manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

bachelor's degree in midwifery is required
Post-based training/qualification in midwifery is Added advantage.
Broad range of clinical midwifery experience acquired through significant practice at a senior level is highly needed.
Must have at least 2 years of proven experience for a known hospital with a high reputation.
Fluent in the Somali language.
Average in the English language.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Minimum 2 years of progressive professional experience in BEMONC services
Midwifery post basic training
Excellent command in Somali and English
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Proactive, result oriented, independent, able to identify and carry out duties with minimum supervision.
