Job Purpose


The Director of Programs is a strategic partner who supports the Executive Director with planning, implementation, and monitoring the program strategy, standards, and guidelines. The Director of Programs will be responsible for the programmatic and operational success of Zizi Afrique Foundation (ZAF). The Director of Programs will ensure effective program development, delivery, and quality control. In this newly established role, the Director of Programs will manage a growing staff of 15 and deploy them for specific/day-to-day assignments, in consultation with the Executive Director.


Key Responsibilities / Duties / Tasks

Review and recommend policy improvement for impact delivery

III. Operational Responsibilities / Tasks


Program Strategy: Management, Planning and Execution

  1. a) Assist the Executive Director in leading the development and implementation of the ZAF program strategy.


  1. b) Oversee management of ZAF programs using effective management and MELS principles and tools


  1. c) Facilitates reporting and managing performance and impact of the program strategy, to determine success and any necessary adjustments.


  1. d) Ensure that projects document and exercise best practices and lessons learned.


  1. e) Ensure that ZAF programs and projects are managed effectively and efficiently so that they meet their goals and objectives within the timelines of the organization guidelines, policies, and commitments to partners.


  1. f) Support efficient resource management – supervise budget development and implementation.


  1. g) Locate and introduce new talents/connections/resources that may be useful for ZAF.


  1. h) Act as overall budget holder for the programs budget, approving program requests to ensure they are in line with program goals and objectives.


Fundraising and partnership

  1. a) Track opportunities for new projects and programs and monitor pipeline development and ensure that the pursuit of funding opportunities and proposal development is in line with program strategy.


  1. b) Facilitate high-quality development and delivery of concept notes, written proposals, and donor reporting.


  1. c) Assist the ED to promote and maintain relationships with development partners (donors, potential donors, technical partners, implementation partners and government agencies).


  1. d) Act as required to enhance organizational image.


  1. e) Support with donor meetings and strategic relationship engagements.


  1. f) Prepare high-quality, accurate and timely reports.


  1. g) Contribute to the visibility of Zizi Afrique’s impact.




  1. a) Encourage the efficient flow of communication throughout the organization, especially support the Program Managers in cross-team working and communications.


  1. b) Support Program Managers to adopt and implement innovation across the projects and programs.


  1. c) Support the Program Managers and Human Resource Team with people management tasks.


  1. d) Provide programmatic leadership and set priorities for program management of the program team.


  1. e) Represent ZAF interests in public and professional circles through meetings, workshops, conferences, and webinars.


  1. f) Manage and develop highly capable program management team that supports programming of ZAF and align their efforts in concept and program goals.


Research, Knowledge Management and MELS


  1. a) Guide the program team to use, manage and document, Knowledge Management, to improve their projects/programs.


  1. b) Encourage the efficient flow of communication throughout the organization, especially support the Program Managers in cross-team working.


  1. c) Lead the MELS team in ensuring that MELS mandate is being met by ZAF.


  1. d) Encourage learning and innovation within the organization



  1. a) Attend, and fully participate in staff meetings and retreats as required.


  1. b) Write bimonthly and annual progress reports and use these as the basis for monthly and annual engagements with the line supervisor.


  1. c) Deputize the Executive Director as required.


  1. d) Perform other duties as may be required from time to time.


Job Dimensions:


  1. Financial Responsibility:


Position is responsible for all program budgets, around USD 2 million per year

Position makes decisions for self and organization in program matters

  1. Working Conditions:


Normal working conditions; Workdays, 40-hour week.


Job Competencies (Knowledge, Experience and Attributes / Skills).Academic Qualifications

**Graduate qualification in Education, or a related field, PhD is preferred but no pre-condition.


Professional Qualifications / Membership to professional bodies


Project Management Professional (PMP)


Previous relevant work experience required.


10 years of progressive work experience with demonstrated management success and oversight of grant funded projects. Minimum of 5 years in a senior management or leadership position. Has held a senior management position in an impact organization in East Africa. Is ambitious and passionate for impact in education. Has desire to grow in an impactful organization that works with children and youth.
