About Habibi.Works
We are currently looking for a general supporter, wood workshop supervisor, bike workshop supervisor and sewing atelier supervisor to join our team!
Habibi.Works is a solidarity-based makerspace and community hub located next to the refugee camp of Katsikas in Northern Greece. It provides access to tools, knowledge, and shared spaces for people on the move, local residents, and international volunteers.
Rooted in values of solidarity, mutual respect, and justice, the project fosters community, agency, and resilience in a context shaped by European migration policies.
Role Description
Our Sewing Atelier Supervisor is responsible for managing the sewing atelier so that people have the opportunity to use the workshop and sewing machines independently, but also to gain and enhance their skills with sewing machines, textiles and tailoring.
The Sewing Workshop is a heavily used working area in Habibi.Works with both very skilled tailors coming to use the space, as well as people who have no experience with sewing machines yet.
Primary responsibilities:
Make sure people use the machines correctly. If you see someone misusing a machine, offer your help; it is about education and empowerment. Show someone how to use the tools correctly and then encourage them to use the machine correctly
Manage the material stock. Sort out material that is not needed and document if any material is missing. Communicate needs to the relevant team member and support in sourcing new materials
Manage the even distribution of materials and adhere to our guidelines on material use per individual project (2 metres per 3 weeks)
Support people in realizing their projects; guide people through the design and building process if needed
Ensure the space is clean and tidy / materials are put back after use. Engage participants in this!
Keep an eye on the machines and tools. If anything breaks, communicate this to the relevant team member to find a solution
Ensure participants adhere to Habibi.Works’ “making, not taking” policy i.e. only completed projects can be taken home, not raw/unworked material
Secondary responsibilities:
Manage the distribution of weekly appointments for the sewing atelier; there is a dedicated appointment distribution given the demand for new fabric
Documentation of the activities and creation of guides for various projects
Skills and Experience
Basic sewing skills, particularly pattern-making, clothing design and creation
Knowledge of maintenance and set up of sewing machines
(Desirable) Knowledge of embroidery, quilting and designing
Requirements:
Commitment: minimum 6 weeks
Minimum age: 22
Ability to live in the EU for duration of stay (we cannot support with visa processes)
What we offer:
Shared accommodation
Meals on working days
Two weekend days (Sunday & Monday)
A meaningful role in a grassroots, solidarity-based project
Possibility to extend to a long term contract after 3 months
